I&#039;ve spent the evening speaking with the German Judy Blume, or so I&#039;m told. We discussed publishing in Europe, and I am under the impression, given your blog about Vienna and her comments about Germany, that Europe is behaving progressively in matters of adopting new and individual-driven (as opposed to institution-driven) practices in the age-old business of putting word to page. Do you think, as the Nobel committee pointed out earlier this week — in connection with literature —  that American newspapers have become provincial and not part of a greater global discourse?</description>
